The following frequently-asked questions (FAQs) are divided into two sections: Patient-specific FAQs and General FAQs. Please click on the text to access answers to the questions below. 

Patient-Specific FAQs

Why do I have to arrive at the Surgery Center an hour before my procedure start time?

Arriving an hour prior to your scheduled surgical time is important in order to complete the registration process and admissions process. You will also be interviewed by our anesthesiologist at that time. During that hour, we will complete all paperwork, make sure all your questions are answered and prepare you for surgery.

What do I need to bring with me on the day of my surgery?

  • Insurance card
  • Picture I.D. (driver’s license)
  • Payment for your financial responsibility (if applicable)
  • Glasses if you need them to read and write
  • Please DO NOT bring any valuables or money

What pre-operative instructions do I need to remember?

  • Ensure that you have completed your One Medical Passport at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled surgery day. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of your procedure.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your procedure. This includes hard candy, gum, etc.
  • If you routinely take blood pressure medication, diabetic medications or any other critical medications, you must talk to one of our nurses prior to surgery for further instructions based on the procedure being performed.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. For procedures dealing with your upper extremities, please wear a button-down top for ease of dressing after your procedure. For procedures dealing with your lower extremities, wear shorts or sweatpants.
  • Please DO NOT wear any jewelry including wedding rings or body piercings.
  • Please DO NOT wear makeup or contact lenses.
  • You MUST have a responsible person to drive you home after your procedure if you are having any anesthesia other than local. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of your procedure.
  • Please remember to call the Intake Specialist the day before your procedure between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for your final arrival time.

What is One Medical Passport?

One Medical Passport is our online health history collection system. This secure, HIPAA-compliant website allows you the convenience of providing necessary health information prior to your surgery from your own personal computer. By supplying us with information about your current medications, allergies, reactions, and medical and surgical histories, we can better prepare for your surgery and save you time in admissions on the day of your procedure.

I am a diabetic, why am I not scheduled as the first patient of the day?

There are numerous factors that must be taken into consideration when scheduling patient procedure times, including equipment availability, physician schedules, and the specific requirements for all the procedures being performed on that particular day. However, the Surgery Center staff, as well as the anesthesia team, is very experienced at treating diabetic patients for surgery. You will receive specific instructions on how to manage your diabetes the day of surgery on your preoperative call. In general, you should check your blood sugar upon awakening. We suggest keeping a clear liquid such as apple juice on hand for the day of surgery. If your sugar is low, we suggest you drink some of the clear liquid and then recheck your blood sugar in 30 minutes. If it is still low, please call the Center at (484) 846-5100 for further instructions. If your sugar is high, please call the center and the anesthesiologist will instruct you on how to manage it. 

Should I stop taking any medications that thin my blood?

Blood thinners (which include, but are not limited to Aggrenox, Coumadin, Heparin, aspirin, fish oil, ibuprofen, green tea, muscle relaxers, etc) are usually stopped at least 7 days prior to your procedure, although some procedures performed at the Center do not require these medications being stopped. Please notify our Intake Specialist that you are taking these medications and she will inform you of the requirements based on the procedure being performed. You can also speak with your physician directly about this when you are scheduling your procedure.

Do I need to have pre-admission testing prior to my surgery?

The Crozer-Keystone Surgery Center at Brinton Lake only requires pre-admission testing on patients over the age of 55 who are undergoing shoulder surgery or lithotripsy. Upon completion of your medical history in One Medical Passport, our online health history collection system, our anesthesiologist will review your chart. If he feels you need pre-admission testing such as blood work or an EKG, you will be contacted directly by our Intake Specialist. Your physician may also order pre-admission testing if he or she deems it necessary.

What should I expect during my recovery period?

Recovery procedures and discharge instructions are specific to each procedure. You will receive written instructions on the day of your procedure. If, however, you would like to have these instructions prior to your date of service, please call the Crozer-Keystone Surgery Center at (484) 846-5100 or stop by and we will give you a copy for your review, as well as answer any questions you may have. Remember, we want you to be as comfortable and relaxed as possible for your procedure.

What post-operative instructions do I need to remember?

  • After surgery, your recovery room nurse will review your discharge instructions with you and your family member or the person driving you home.
  • You will be given a copy of these instructions to take with you.
  • On the following business day, a representative of the Surgery Center will call to see how you’re doing. Please ensure that we have the proper contact information so that we can follow-up with you.

Are there any additional instructions for pediatric patients?

  • Do not allow your child to eat anything after midnight the night before surgery. They may, however, have clear liquids (apple juice, ginger ale) up to 4 hours prior to their procedure.
  • Please bring a “lovey” or special comfort item for your child.
  • Please bring an extra change of clothes, just in case.
  • Remember that you are required to stay on-site at the Surgery Center until your child is discharged.

General FAQs

What types of procedures do you perform at the center?

We perform most specialties and procedures that can be performed in an outpatient setting, including (but not limited to) knee and shoulder arthroscopies, bunionectomies, hammer toe correction, cataract (eye) surgery, insertion of ear tubes, tonsillectomy, sinus surgery, hernia repair, breast biopsy, excision of cysts, moles, or masses, pain management injections, sling insertions, prostate biopsies and fracture fixation. What insurances do you accept?

The Crozer-Keystone Surgery Center at Brinton Lake accepts most major insurance carriers. We also offer a comprehensive financial assistance program for those who do not have insurance. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. 

What should I expect to pay on the day of service?

Like all outpatient facilities and hospitals, we collect the co-pays required by your insurance company. When your procedure is scheduled, we will contact your insurance company to verify your benefits and obtain the co-pay information. Our business office will then call you to confirm your financial responsibility due on the date of service.

Please note that if your insurance company requires you to pay a deductible before coverage begins, you will be responsible to pay up to that amount toward the cost of your surgery on the day of your procedure. If you are unable to pay the full amount on that day, payment plans can be arranged in advance.

Are you accredited and licensed to practice in Pennsylvania?

We are state-licensed, Medicare-approved and accredited by The Joint Commission. We adhere to the highest standards of care and pride ourselves on the care we provide to our patients.

How are you affiliated with Crozer-Keystone Health System?

The Crozer-Keystone Surgery Center at Brinton Lake became a service of Crozer-Chester Medical Center on August 1, 2012. The Crozer-Keystone Surgery Center uses Crozer's NPI (1134212772) and TIN (23-1637191) numbers for pre-certifications and referrals for surgeries.

I have a child who needs surgery and our surgeon wants to perform the procedure at the Surgery Center. Do you have experience with pediatrics? Is it safe?

The Crozer-Keystone Surgery Center at Brinton Lake is a very safe and efficient facility for a procedure to be done, especially for children. Caring for children as young as 6 months of age, we schedule most pediatric cases as the first cases of the day.

Our pediatric patients are cared for only by PALS-trained nurses and pediatric-trained anesthesia staff, all of whom are very talented at making children feel comfortable and relaxed. Our anesthesiologists and CRNAs have years of experience administering anesthesia to pediatric patients at many facilities, including Crozer-Keystone hospitals. Our registered nurses and anesthesia professionals are also trained in pediatric emergency procedures.

We realize that parents and their children both have fears about surgery. We welcome you and your child to visit our facility prior to your child’s surgery day for a tour. We’ll arrange for you to meet our staff, see our operating room, and interact with some of the things your child will see, hear, and feel on the day of surgery. Helping children understand what to expect is very effective in allaying fear.

Many studies suggest that children require less anesthesia, experience less pain and recover more easily if they know what to expect and if they have people they trust around them. On the day of your child’s surgery, we’ll minimize the amount of time that you and your child are separated. The only time your child will spend away from you is during the procedure itself. When your child enters the recovery room and begins to awaken from anesthesia, you will be allowed to rejoin your child.

Are your anesthesia providers board-certified?

Absolutely. Adult and pediatric anesthesia services are provided by credentialed, board-certified physicians and CRNA (certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists) from Associates in Anesthesia (AIA). Services provided by AIA include regional anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care (MAC), general anesthesia, and peripheral nerve blocks (as a method of pain control). In addition to the Surgery Center at Brinton Lake, AIA provides services to Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Roxborough Medical Center.
