Upon arrival at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill on a recent Sunday, Regan Thompson of Glenolden was hopeful that she’d get an epidural before delivering her baby. But despite best laid plans, when it comes to the “grand entrance,” baby is the boss.

Thompson arrived at DCMH at 2:45 a.m. on her due date, after having contractions since 11 p.m. the night before. “They were sporadic,” husband Jon says, “about five minutes apart.” The Thompsons didn’t think delivery was imminent, but followed their gut instincts and made the trip to the hospital, where one hour later, at 3:46 a.m., Regan gave birth to the couple’s third daughter, Rowan. “I couldn’t have an epidural,” Thompson says, “she came too fast.” Despite missing the window for pain medication, Rowan was born healthy at 7 lbs., 11 oz. and 20½” in length.

“My DCMH labor nurse was wonderful,” says Thompson, who works as a medical/surgical nurse. She and her husband, Jon, were pleased with the care that both she and Rowan received throughout their stay – from the prenatal services provided by the doctors and midwives at the Crozer-Keystone OB/GYN at Drexel Hill practice, to the attentiveness of DCMH labor and delivery nurses and OB/GYN Steven Troy, D.O., to post-natal care in the hospital.

The couple’s older daughters, Makena, 12, and Victoria, 9, eagerly awaited Rowan’s arrival home while Mom was in the hospital. “They just wanted to hold her,” Regan says, “and Makena is excited to babysit her new sister.”

The family is happy with their DCMH experience. “My stay really was a great and positive experience!” Thompson says.
