Crozer-Keystone Health System appointed Ralph J. Riviello, M.D., FACEP, its new chair of emergency medicine.

Riviello joined Crozer-Keystone after five years as professor of emergency medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine, where he was named Emergency Physician of the Year by the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Riviello earned his medical degree at Hahnemann University, and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Allegheny General Hospital. He also has a master’s degree in forensic medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and is a member of several professional medical societies, including the American College of Emergency Medicine.

“Dr. Riviello is an experienced and effective leader,” said Thomas J. Bader, M.D., the system’s chief medical officer. “We are excited that he joined us, because of his ability to knit together a complex four-hospital emergency department.” Bader also heralded Riviello’s appreciation for the importance of resident and medical student education, since Crozer-Keystone has a robust education initiative.

In addition to emergency medicine, Dr. Riviello takes special interest in helping victims of violence, abuse, neglect, and sexual assault. He is on the board of directors for Woman Organized Against Rape, where he was awarded the Bridge to Courage Award for his dedication to ending sexual violence. He has also served on the Pennsylvania Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Committee, the Pennsylvania Violent Crime Death Reporting System Advisory Panel, and the City of Philadelphia Sexual Assault Advisory Committee.

Riviello also has a special interest in forensics, and served as chair of the forensic medicine section of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has also served on work groups in Philadelphia focusing on HIV prevention and testing.
